Wide Mouth Canning Jars Didn’t Always Exist?
What is all the hullabaloo about the wide mouth canning jar? Well they did not always exist. Older jars were narrower necked and more difficult to work with when trying to can larger vegetables or fruits.
The narrow or regular mouth canning jar has a width of about 2 3/8 inches. Wide mouth canning jars have a diameter of 3 inches. This may not sound like a big difference, but it was enough to make the wide mouth canning jar the clear winner in the canning jar race. Kerr Canning were the first to produce the wider mouthed jar, and Ball and others soon adopted the design.
